🛠️ How to Clean Your Aircond Filter – Detailed Step-by-Step
Follow these steps exactly. I have used this method on thousands of service calls. It works for all major brands: Daikin, Panasonic, Mitsubishi, Midea, Acson, Samsung, LG, and Sharp.
Turn off the aircond and the circuit breaker
Use your remote to switch off the unit. Then go to your electrical box (DB box) and flip the switch for that aircond to OFF. This is a safety step – it prevents the fan from spinning while your hands are inside. It also protects the electronic board from any accidental short circuit.
💡 Pro tip: If you don’t know which breaker controls your aircond, just switch off the main breaker for the whole house. It’s safer but you’ll need to reset your clock afterwards.
Open the front panel
Stand on a stable step stool or small ladder. Look at the front of your aircond – there are usually two small indentations or clips on the sides or bottom edge. Gently pull the panel upwards. It will click and stay open by itself. Do not force it. If it resists, check for a screw – some older units have a screw under a small cover.
Once open, you will see the filter(s) – typically one or two long rectangular plastic meshes. Some units have a third small filter for air purification.
Slide out the filter(s)
Grasp the filter by the middle or bottom edge and pull it downwards or towards you. It should slide out smoothly. If it is stuck, gently wiggle it – but never yank. Some units have a small latch that needs to be released. Refer to your user manual if unsure.
Take the filter to a sink, bathroom, or outside. Be careful: a very dirty filter will release a cloud of dust. Do this in a well-ventilated area if you have allergies – wear a mask if needed.
Wash with water only – no soap!
Hold the filter under running water. Use the back side (the side that faces away from the room) as the entry point – this pushes dirt out the way it came in. Use a soft brush (an old toothbrush works perfectly) to gently scrub the mesh. Pay attention to corners and edges where dust accumulates.
Why no soap? Soap leaves a sticky residue. That residue attracts even more dust, making the filter get dirty faster next time. Also, when the air blows over a soapy filter, it can release tiny bubbles that irritate lungs. Only use water.
⚠️ Exception: If your filter is greasy (e.g., from a kitchen or heavy smoking), you can use a few drops of mild dish soap. But you must rinse EXTREMELY WELL – until no bubbles remain.
Continue rinsing until the water runs clear. For heavily clogged filters, you may need to soak them in a basin of water for 10 minutes first.
Dry completely – this is critical
Shake off excess water. Then place the filter in a well-ventilated area, preferably under a fan or in direct sunlight (if available). Let it dry for at least 1–2 hours. In humid weather, it may take 3 hours. Do not rush this step.
Never put a damp filter back. A wet filter inside a running aircond will:
- Cause mould growth within days
- Create musty smells
- Block airflow even worse than dirt
- Damage the fan motor (water gets into bearings)
You can speed up drying by patting the filter with a dry towel or using a hairdryer on COOL setting only – never hot.
Put the filter back and close the panel
Slide the dry filter back into its slot. Make sure it clicks into place – you should feel it lock. If it does not slide easily, check for obstructions or that you are inserting the correct side facing up (some filters have arrows indicating airflow direction).
Close the front panel firmly. Then turn the circuit breaker back ON. Switch on your aircond using the remote. Let it run for a few minutes. You should notice stronger airflow, faster cooling, and no unusual smells.
